SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

We have a unique episode in the Acts of the Apostles today. A whole roomful of people are baptized with the Holy Spirit before they are baptized with water! The verb used "the Holy Spirit ‘fell' on them" (Acts 10:44) -is characteristic of the way the Spirit works throughout the book of Acts: powerful and surprising. Though this "baptism" is not the normative way the New Testament describes baptism, it is still a good reminder today that the Holy Spirit is not controlled by whether or not we pour water, but rather that our sacramental signs reveal the presence of the Spirit at work among us. And we have a double reinforcement of how this work is accomplished from a Letter and a Gospel bearing John's name. It is love, self-sacrificing and self-giving love, that manifests the Spirit of Jesus in our midst. It is love that is the greatest of commandments. The Spirit is manifested equally through those who live in that love.

It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit.
- John 15:16

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Just as the origins of Lent have to do with accompanying people in the final stages of preparation for baptism at Easter time, so does the structure of the Easter season help the newly received Catholics take root in the community. This is the season of "mystagogy", which means "reflection on the mysteries." This means that new Catholics are remembering the sacraments by which they become one with us, and are sorting out the implications for their everyday life. They can understand the excitement of Cornelius and his family in the first reading, filled with the Holy Spirit, and so eager to begin their new life that they overwhelm St. Peter. The second reading and the Gospel today likewise help our new brothers and sisters to explore their new life as an experience of God's tender love.

Long ago, our tradition named these newly baptized adults and children the "neophytes," from Greek words meaning "newly planted." Newly planted in the garden of faith, they look to us to provide the fertile soil in which their new life can take root and grow. You can help. If you have "neophytes" in your parish, a card or note of welcome; or warm words of congratulations, are still timely. It's Easter!

FEAST OF ST. DYMPHNA - MAY 15TH

Dymphna was born in Ireland in the seventh century. Her father, Damon, a chieftain of great wealth and power, was a pagan. Her mother was a very beautiful and devout Christian. Dymphna was fourteen when her mother died. Her father was so sad that he sent messengers everywhere to find some women of noble birth like his wife, who would be willing to marry him. When none could be found, his evil advisers told him to marry his own daughter. Dymphna fled from her castle Together with a priest, St. Gerebran, and two other friends. Damon found them in Belgium. He gave orders that the priest's head be cut off. Then he tried to make his daughter return to Ireland with him and to marry him. When she refused, he drew his sword and struck off her head. She was then only fifteen years of age. St. Dymphna is the patron of those who suffer with mental illness, because her father acted as a man out of his mind when he killed his own daughter.

PRAYER FOR POPE BENEDICT XVI

Lord, source of eternal life and truth; give to your shepherd, Benedict, a spirit of courage and right judgment, a spirit of knowledge and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care, may he, as successor to the Apostle Peter and Vicar of Christ, build your Church into a sacrament of unity, love and peace for all the world. Amen.

V. Let us pray for Benedict, the Pope.

R. May the Lord preserve him, give him long life, Make him blessed upon the earth, and not hand
Him to the power of his enemies.

V. May your hand be upon your holy servant.

R. And upon your Son, whom you have anointed.

Our Father...Hail Mary...Glory Be...

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, In solidarity with Our Holy Father.

THE PRAYERS AT MASS

All Catholic parishes in the United States, for the first time in about forty years, are, using a new English translation of all the prayers. These prayers are found in The Roman Missal, the large book that we are accustomed to seeing the priest use at our Eucharistic liturgies.

In the early part of this century, the late Blessed John Paul II called for the original Latin Missal (the official prayer book for Mass for the entire Catholic Church worldwide) to be re-translated into the various languages prayed throughout the world. In particular, he and other Church leaders felt that the English translation could be improved. He called for new translations that would be much more like the Latin texts upon which they are based, so that all Catholics throughout the world would become more closely united by praying translations that were closer to the original.

The words that we pray at Mass express our beliefs; it is important that the translations capture and express these beliefs clearly. The translation process has come to a culmination now, as we begin using this new translation at Mass.

GOD, PLEASE...

I asked God to take away my bad habits...
God said, "It is not for Me to take them away, but for you to give them up."
I asked God to grant me patience...
God said, "Patience is a by-product of tribulations; it isn't granted, it is learned."
I asked God to grant me happiness...
God said, "I give you blessings; happiness is up to you."
I asked God to spare me pain...
God said, "Suffering brings you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to Me."
I asked God to make my spirit grow...
God, said, "You must grow on your own, but I will prune you to make you fruitful."
I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life...
God said, "I have given you life so that you may enjoy all things."
I asked God to help me love others as much as He loves me...
God said "Ahhhhhh, finally you have the idea."
